Seeing BugOtter in your logs?
Someone asked BugOtter to watch this site, or ran one of its free checks on it. Here is exactly what the bot does.
- BugOtter/1.0user agent for monitoring
- 3regions at most
- Read-onlynever signs in or posts
What it sends
Uptime checks
One request to each address a user added, on their plan's schedule (every minute or every 5 minutes), from up to three regions. Its user agent always starts with
BugOtter/1.0.Certificate and domain checks
A TLS handshake to read when the certificate expires (every 6 hours) and a public registry lookup for the domain's expiry date.
Free tools
The site check loads the page, its scripts and a short list of well-known paths (like
/.env) to warn the owner if they're public; it saysBugOtterCheck/1.0. The free status page loads each listed address when someone opens it. Both only run when a person asks, and both are rate-limited.
It never submits forms, never signs in, and never crawls links around your site.
Didn't ask for this? Write to hello@bugotter.com with the domain and we'll stop checking it.
