Baremetrics alternative

A Baremetrics alternative for Stripe, Polar, Lemon Squeezy and Creem

BugOtter shows MRR, churn, customers and failed payments for every app you run, from Stripe, Polar, Lemon Squeezy or Creem, next to the traffic that brought the money and the uptime and errors that cost you some. It starts at $10 a month billed yearly. If you want dunning, cancellation surveys or forecasting, Baremetrics does those and we don't.

  • 4providers: Stripe, Polar, Lemon Squeezy, Creem
  • $10a month to start, billed yearly

What Baremetrics does well

Baremetrics has been the friendly face of subscription metrics for years. It goes well past a dashboard:

  • It acts, not only reports. Recover chases failed payments, with the promise that it recovers more than Baremetrics costs or your next month is free. Cancellation Insights asks people why they leave.
  • Finance-grade planning. Forecast+ connects QuickBooks or Xero for forecasts and scenario planning, and the Scale plan adds budget and expense tracking.
  • Benchmarks. On Growth and up, you can see how your numbers compare with similar companies.
  • Many billing systems. Stripe, Braintree, Chargebee, Recurly, both app stores and Shopify Partners, with Paddle in beta and a Universal Connector for anything else.
  • An MCP server. A read-only MCP covering 21 metrics, for Claude, Cursor and Codex.

Where BugOtter is different

Made for the providers indie founders actually use

A lot of solo founders sell through Polar, Lemon Squeezy or Creem, because a merchant of record handles their sales tax. Baremetrics' integrations page doesn't list any of the three.

BugOtter reads all of them with a read-only key, the same way it reads Stripe, and you can connect more than one.

Per app, not per company

Baremetrics prices by your company's revenue. BugOtter is built for one founder with many small apps: map each product to an app once, and MRR, churn, customers and payments are split per app.

Revenue in different currencies is never added together. Sales gone quiet, a new MRR high and your first sale on a new app show up as they happen.

BugOtter revenue for one app: MRR, how MRR moved in the last 30 days, a projection, revenue, subscribers and trials
  1. MRR for this app, read from the payment provider, and what it's worth a year.
  2. How MRR moved: new, upgrades, downgrades and cancellations, as a waterfall.
  3. A simple projection: where MRR lands if the last 30 days repeat. Trials aren't counted.

Money next to its causes

Because the same account has traffic, uptime and errors, the revenue page can say more than “MRR went down”:

  • Which source brought it. Revenue per traffic source, from real payments, renewals and refunds (how it works).
  • What an outage cost. An estimate of missed sales while an app was down, from your usual visitors and revenue per visitor.
  • Which error hurt paying customers. Errors from the BugOtter script show how many paying customers hit them, and who reached checkout and didn't buy.

Read-only, always

BugOtter never charges, refunds or emails your customers. That's also why it doesn't do dunning: recovering payments means writing to your provider and emailing people.

When a payment fails, BugOtter alerts you on Telegram, Discord, Slack, email or push, and you decide.

Pricing side by side

Baremetrics prices by your revenue; BugOtter by how many apps you run. Here are both entry points, and the plan for 5 apps.

Moving from Baremetrics

BugOtter only reads, so you can run it next to Baremetrics for as long as you like.

  1. Create a read-only key

On Stripe: Developers → API keys → Create restricted key, with Read on Products, Prices, Invoices, Checkout Sessions, Refunds and Subscriptions. Polar uses an organization token, Lemon Squeezy and Creem an API key.
  2. Connect it on Revenue

BugOtter checks the key, reads your current subscriptions and the last 90 days of payments, and starts recording MRR changes from there.
  3. Map products to apps

Say which product belongs to which app, once. Revenue from a product without an app shows up as “not linked”, with a button to fix it.
  4. Link sales to traffic (optional)

Add the BugOtter script to each site. Stripe Payment Links link themselves; for your own checkout, pass the visit id (below).
  5. Keep Baremetrics for what we don't do

If you rely on Recover or Cancellation Insights, there's no harm in running both: BugOtter only reads.
Step 4: browser, then server
const visitorId = window.bo?.visitorId?.();
// Stripe Checkout Session, Polar or Creem checkout:
metadata: { bugotter_visitor_id: visitorId }

Should you switch?

Questions

Does Baremetrics work with Polar, Lemon Squeezy or Creem?

Baremetrics' integrations page doesn't list them. It lists Stripe, Braintree, Chargebee, Recurly, the Apple App Store, Google Play and Shopify Partners, with Paddle in beta, plus a Universal Connector for sending data by API or CSV. BugOtter connects to Polar, Lemon Squeezy and Creem directly, with a read-only key.

Is BugOtter a full Baremetrics replacement?

For seeing your numbers, often yes: MRR, churn, customers and failed payments per app. For acting on them, no. BugOtter doesn't recover failed payments, run cancellation surveys, forecast with your accounting data or benchmark you against other companies. Baremetrics sells those.

Can BugOtter charge, refund or email my customers?

No. BugOtter is read-only toward payment providers. It asks for a read-only key (a restricted key on Stripe) and only ever reads with it. It never charges, refunds or emails anyone's customers.

How much history does BugOtter show after I connect?

Payments from the last 90 days are read when you connect, and current subscriptions are dated by their own start date. From then on, BugOtter records every change in MRR as it syncs, so the MRR chart gets richer over time rather than starting with years of history.

I run several products on one Stripe account. Does that work?

Yes. That's what BugOtter is built for. Map each product to an app once, and revenue, MRR and customers are split per app. Revenue in different currencies is never added together.

Can I see which marketing brought each customer?

Yes, when your site runs the BugOtter script. Stripe Payment Links are linked on their own. For your own Stripe, Polar or Creem checkout, pass the visit id as metadata. Lemon Squeezy revenue can't be linked to sources yet, because its API doesn't expose checkout data.

Your MRR, per app, from the providers you actually use.

14 days of everything, no card needed. Plans from $10 a month, billed yearly.
